    Selected stones are instantly spread over the hot tar and compacted into place with heavy rollers.

What is Oil and Stone Paving?

An oil and stone driveway, also known as tar and chip, offers the natural beauty of loose gravel without the constant maintenance. We apply hot liquid asphalt directly over a stable base and lock specialized gravel chips into the surface. The result is an elegant, highly textured estate driveway that resists cracking in winter.

  • Will the loose stones wash away?

    While there will be a small amount of loose surface stone initially, the vast majority is permanently embedded and locked into the asphalt base.

  • Can you plow an oil and stone driveway?

    Yes, but plows should be slightly raised to avoid scraping the stone. We highly recommend using a rubber plow edge.

  • Is an oil and stone driveway cheaper than asphalt?

    Oil and stone is generally comparable to or slightly less expensive than a full depth asphalt driveway, but significantly more cost-effective than pavers.

  • How long does an oil and stone driveway last?

    With proper maintenance, a chip and seal driveway can last 10 to 12 years before needing a new top layer of oil and stone.

  • What areas do you install oil and stone driveways?
